About
Welcome to Nurturing Early Literacy: Honoring the Journey, Not the Outcome. This professional development workshop is designed for early childhood educators who want to thoughtfully support early literacy in ways that are meaningful, developmentally appropriate, and rooted in play and relationships. Through engaging lessons and reflective prompts, participants will explore how young children develop literacy skills through everyday experiences, storytelling, drawing, and rich conversations—not worksheets or drills. The workshop covers key topics such as oral language development, emergent writing, the role of environment, and the importance of honoring each child’s pace and process. Educators will reflect on the impact of responsive interactions, explore alternatives to worksheets, and discover strategies for creating literacy-rich, inclusive spaces. Participants will leave with practical insights, real-world examples, and ideas that reflect the values of the BC Early Learning Framework (2019), especially its belief that learning is a journey rooted in relationships, play, and multiple ways of knowing. This workshop provides approximately 2 hours of professional development.
